Running Time: 23:5

On May 20, 2001, David Pottruck, President and Co-CEO of Charles Schwab & Co., addressed the 2001 graduating class of the Haas School. In his inspiring, colorful, and amusing talk, he outlined his career path to date, calling his presentation "Bumbling Your Way up the Ladder." Along with other advice, Pottruck offers three tips: First, you don't have to be right about your first job. You don't even have to be close. Just learn something and refine your goals from the experience. Second, if you want to run something, volunteer for challenging projects in areas you know nothing about. Third, take jobs that no one else wants.
